The Service of Remembrance for Mr. John "Jack” H. Kearns, age 89, of Homosassa, Florida, will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at the Homosassa Chapel of Hooper Funeral Homes. Internment will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Wednesday at the Chapel. Jack was born May 2, 1928 in Newark, NJ, son of James and Florence (Siverson) Kearns. He died June 16, 2017 in Crystal River, FL. Jack became a Merchant Seaman in the Merchant Marines at age 16. He traveled to Europe, the South Pacific, Japan and up and down the East and West coasts of the United States and sailed through the Panama Canal seven times. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. and served both in the regular Marines and in the Marine Corps. Reserves during WWII, the Korean and Viet Nam wars. After 21 years of service in the USMC he retired at the rank of Master Sergeant. After his military service Jack worked for AT&T (formerly NJ Bell Telephone Co.) as a Lineman, Installer, Repairman and Supervisor until his retirement after 28 years of service. Jack and Robbie moved from Lake Hopatcong, NJ to Homosassa in 1986 and Jack began working at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park within three weeks of arriving in Florida. He served 10 years as a Park Ranger in the Wildlife Dept. Jack so loved the Park the very next day he started volunteering at the Park and volunteered for the next 21 years. Jack enjoyed his life in Florida, he loved football, especially the Gators and the Bucs. He loved working with children and animals and was instrumental in starting the now very popular “Wildlife Week in the Park”. He studied the history of the Park and was asked many times to give talks on that subject, especially on Heritage Days. He was the “unofficial Park Historian” for many years. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, a son Drew Tate, and a granddaughter. Survivors include his loving wife of 39 years, Roberta (Robbie) Kearns of Homosassa FL; three daughters, Dolores (Jeff) Crooke of King William, VA; Deborah (Michael) Cusack of Rockaway, NJ; and Dellora (Richard) Norris of Lake Hopatcong, NJ and four sons, James (Mindy) Kearns of Salem, NY; Donald (Terri) Tate; Dennis (Sue) Tate, both of Lake Hopatcong and David (Dana) Tate of Sparta, NJ; 19 Grandchildren and 12 Great Grandchildren.
