The Service of Remembrance for Mr. Ronald J. "Rock" O'Hara, age 91, of Hernando, Florida, will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, May 1, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness with Pastor Ron Pfiefer officiating. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida. Mr. O'Hara died April 22, 2017 under the care of Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast, Lecanto, FL. He was born August 19, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA, son of the late Raymond and Agnes (Egerter) O'Hara. He was reared in West View, PA and attended West View High School where he lettered in wrestling and football. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Army Aircorps. After training, he was sent to Kettering, England with the 801st Air Division. The unit to be known later as the Carpetbaggers, who flew night missions to supply the French Resistance. After completing 50 missions, he was sent to Brindisi, Italy to aid in post war recovery. When the Air National Guard of PA formed a unit at Pittsburgh, Ron was with the team which "pioneered" the set up. After 38 years he retired as Chief Master Sergeant, ammunition field. While in Pittsburgh, he was a member of the Highland Country Club, the West View VFW, and a representative for Fidelity Investments. He was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church after he and his wife Marcia, whom he married in 1964, moved to Hanky Farms. Mr. O'Hara was an active Gideon, troop leader for the Indiana Guides, and a coach for midget football. In 1994 Ron and Marcia moved to Citrus Hills, FL putting down some roots after extensive travels. Ron became involved locally, becoming active in the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness. His interests included golf, being a member of the HOA in Canterbury Lakes, Sky Watch, volunteering at the Ted Williams Baseball Museum and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office neighborhood watch committee. He was a life member of the VFW, charter member of the WWII Museum in DC, and the WWII Air Museum in New Orleans. Of all the awards he has received throughout the years, he was most humbly pleased to have the French Medal of Honor and the Croix de guerre, presented for being part of the OSS operations in WWII, thus a Chevalier. Ron was preceded in death by his two sons, David Charles and Steven Patrick. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marcia, dearest friends Tom, Lori and Erin Burke, and Doug and John White and his grandson Steven Daniel.
